In the early 1950s, Cecilia, an orphan, becomes pregnant. To hide her pregnancy, the orphanage decides that Cecilia must give her unborn baby to Ida, who is desperate to adopt a child. Cecilia is sent to live with Ida and her maid, Alma, during her pregnancy. For a time, the three women form a strange family. There, they find relief from their loneliness, sadness, and longing. But with the arrival of the baby, the harmonious situation suddenly changes.
